I am talking about "traditional" fanservice- not the definition anime watchers prescribed to it, that being the glorification of a character's figure for the sake of enjoyment (sexual enticement) on the part of the audience. Rather, everything in Haruhi is for the sake of enjoyment on the part of the audience- fanservice. Though every piece of literature seeks the maximum amount of enjoyment out of its audience, most try to say something with its story- the meaning being explicit to the audience, however Haruhi is different. It doesn't use its fanservice to blatantly say something, it uses every logical loophole it can to justify its fanservice- and since everything is logical, though the fanservice is the end goal, it manages to implicitly comment on certain ideas. My point is that Haruhi does everything for the sake of fanservice, but is paradoxically meaty too. Trying to make it out to be a deep commentary doesn't work, but neither does calling it shallow- no matter which way you look at it, Haruhi exists simply for the fun of it, and it has no qualms hiding it.
