Key events[]

  • This episode is exactly the same as the previous episode except Yuki Nagato informs the SOS Brigade that they have repeated the events of August 17-31 15,498 times, in other words, for 594 years. Despite time being reset, Nagato remembers all of these iterations.
  • Due to the time loop, Mikuru Asahina cannot return to the future.
  • The time loop is caused by Haruhi Suzumiya, who subconsciously wants something more out of her summer vacation and so resets it to the beginning each time she doesn't get what she wants.
  • Kyon goes to sleep on August 31, expecting time to keep on looping.

Summary[]

There is again two weeks left of summer vacation, so Haruhi drags the SOS Brigade around to do various activities, including swimming in the pool, going to an O-bon festival, playing with fireworks, and cicada hunting. However, Kyon and Koizumi are plagued by a sense of déjà vu.

One night, Asahina calls Kyon in a panicked state. Kyon meets up with her, Nagato, and Koizumi to find that they has been experiencing an endless loop of events from August 17 to August 31. When August 31 arrives, time resets, along with everyone's memories. The cause is Haruhi, who subconsciously does not want summer to end because she feels she still has things she must do. Those close to Haruhi experience the faded pieces of their reset memories as déjà vu, but the rest of humanity, Haruhi herself included, are completely unaware of it. However, because Nagato is linked to the Data Integration Thought Entity, which transcends space and time, she has memories of every iteration of the time loop. She reveals that this is the 15,498th time they have looped, and that the summer's events repeat with some minor variations each time. Kyon worries about what it was like for Nagato to experience this while remembering everything. He asks her why she didn't say something sooner, and she says her duty is to simply observe.

As Haruhi closes up the summer activities, Kyon suffers an intense moment of déjà vu but can't think of what Haruhi could possibly want, and Haruhi leaves while Kyon says nothing. On August 31, Kyon still has not done his homework, and decides against doing it, leaving it as a problem to be answered either tomorrow or the next time loop.

Characters[]

Paranormal phenomena[]

Haruhi causes time to reset two weeks, as a consequence removing all future beyond those two weeks. The other members of the SOS Brigade experience remnants of memories from earlier versions of the summer as déjà vu. The Data Integration Thought Entity and the data organisms created by it recall everything from the earlier versions of the summer.

Quotes[]

Haruhi: "Listen, Kyon. You'd better not lose to Koizumi. This train is leaving the station!"

Koizumi: "How about trying this out? Give Miss Suzumiya a sudden embrace from behind then whisper 'I love you' into her ear."
Kyon: "And who would be doing that?"
Koizumi: "Is there anyone else who could fill the role other than you?"
Kyon: "I'm exercising my right to veto! Pass #1!"
Koizumi: "All right, how about if I do it? [observes Kyon's reaction] I'm kidding. I'm lacking a certain something for the role. All that would do is cause unnecessary confusion in Miss Suzumiya."
