Key Events[]

  • This episode features the 15,527th loop of the summer. The events are the same as those of the previous five episodes, except for minor changes in clothes and speech.

Summary[]

Haruhi drags the SOS Brigade around to various summer activities, including swimming in a public pool, going to O-bon festival, playing with fireworks, and bug hunting. Kyon is plagued by an increasing sense of déjà vu as the activities continue.

Again, Asahina calls Kyon in a panicked state, asking him to meet her. Kyon meets up with her, Nagato, and Koizumi, who again explain that the world has been experiencing an endless time loop from August 17 to August 31 because Haruhi feels she still has things she must do during summer vacation. Nagato reveals that this is the 15,527th time they have looped.

Haruhi closes up the summer activities. Kyon suffers a more intense moment of déjà vu than before, but still can't think of what to do to make Haruhi satisfied and leaves his summer homework unfinished, therefore letting the loop continue.

Characters[]

Paranormal phenomena[]

Haruhi causes time to reset two weeks, as a consequence removing all future beyond those two weeks. The other members of the SOS Brigade experience remnants of memories from earlier versions of the summer as déjà vu. The Data Integration Thought Entity and the data organisms created by it recall everything from the earlier versions of the summer.

Quotes[]

Koizumi: "I was having a little chat with Miss Asahina earlier."
Kyon: "Next time, call me. And you stay home!"

Trivia[]

  • This episode was the 18th episode broadcast for Season 2, but was the eighth new episode.
  • The episode opens with a close-up of a day calendar saying August 8, keeping the theme of "8" as a sideways infinity. In the dubbed version, Kyon states, "Wrong.", apparently reflecting the fact that the date is in fact August 17. (In the subtitled version, he states, "Something's off." In both the dubbed and subtitled versions, his statement is a slightly terser form of what he says at the beginning of the previous five episodes.)
  • During the swimming pool scene in this episode, Haruhi loses to Nagato in a swimming race, and she says "Yuki, let's go one more time!" (in the dubbed version, "Yuki, one more time! Come on!"), a possible allusion to one more episode remaining in the cycle. However, in the following episode Haruhi wins the swimming race and says "Almost! Let's go one more time!".
  • When Kyon and Koizumi are at the mall waiting for the girls to change, they are standing in front of a display window with the word "ENDLESS" in all capital letters behind them.
  • After the characters figure out time is looping, when Kyon is figuring out how long Nagato has been experiencing the same two weeks, he is standing on the word Tomare!. This is the name of the second ending theme for the show, and it appears in simple print during the ending credits.
  • This is the only Endless Eight episode in which background music does not play and the activities of the SOS Brigade are not shown when Kyon narrates the events between the stargazing night and August 30th. (In "Endless Eight VI", Kyon does not narrate the events but they are shown with background music playing, and in "Endless Eight VIII", the activities are not shown but Kyon narrates them with background music.)
