"Kyon, your phone is ringing."
―Kyon's Sister's catchphrase during the Endless Eight arc
Kyon's sister (キョンの妹, Kyon no Imōto) is a 6th grade student. She is the younger sister of Kyon, and like her brother, her real name is unknown. She spread around the nickname "Kyon" and caused everyone to call him that. She is known to the SOS Brigade as "Little Sister".
Sayaka Aoki voices her in the Japanese dub and Kari Wahlgren voices her in the English dub.
Description[]
Like Kyon, Kyon's sister is a normal human with no supernatural abilities at all. Apparently, Kyon's sister was responsible for spreading Kyon's name around, as when the siblings' aunt came to visit, she referred to Kyon with the pet name "Kyon", and his sister told it to her friends. Kyon apparently does not like this, as he misses the time she once called him "older brother" (お兄ちゃん, Onii-chan). (Not referring to an older brother in a way resembling this in Japan is unusual. Kyon's sister even goes as far as to refer to him as "Kyon-kun", using the subordinate "-kun" suffix; in normal life, this would be considered very rude, and so it can be assumed that Kyon is somewhat tolerant of this.) The voice actress for Kyon's sister, Sayaka Aoki, once said that using a nickname like Kyon shows both that she is close to her brother and that she does not idolize him.[2]
Apparently, Kyon's sister's friends know Kyon relatively well, as one of her friends Miyoko Yoshimura feels comfortable enough around Kyon to ask him to take her to see a movie that is for people over the age of 12. She is also seen in the anime as being Kyon's "alarm clock" given that she apparently tasks herself with waking Kyon in the mornings which she does by forcefully dragging him out of bed.
She hates being left home alone, and once, she even hides in Kyon's bag in order to accompany him to a trip to a lone island (in the anime she succeeds and is allowed to go).
She has a close relationship with a cat named Shamisen, who was discovered in a bunch of stray cats in The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya. She is friends with Mikuru and Tsuruya. She is the only person who speaks informally to Haruhi, other than Kyon.
Biography[]
Kyon's sister plays a very minor role in the series, once in a while participating in SOS Brigade activities such as helping out in the baseball game in "The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya", attending the "Remote Island Syndrome" mystery (in the anime only), taking a small role in "The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00" as Itsuki's sister, and traveling with the brigade to Tsuruya's place in "Snow Mountain Syndrome". In the Endless Eight arc, she begins the time loop by watching a baseball game with Kyon and informs him that his phone is ringing.
Kyon's sister often likes to participate in SOS Brigade activities, and although Kyon likes to see her happy about all of the events, he does not want her to get too involved, especially after he meets Kyoko Tachibana and Fujiwara, thinking that they are so nasty that they might ruin her perception of espers and time travelers.
Trivia[]
- A manga-only story, "Show Must Go On", has Kyon's sister in a central role, showing her participation in the Cultural Festival at North High.
- Has a character song version (sung by the Japanese voice actress) of Hare Hare Yukai. It is found in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Character Song Vol. 6 Kyon's Sister.
- Even in the SOS Brigade's film, she is credited without a real name, as simply "Kyon's sister" playing the character "Itsuki's sister".
