- This article is about the anime episode. For the short story, see Live A Live.
Key events[]
- The Cultural Festival takes place.
- Kyon, Taniguchi, and Kunikida go around observing the stands and booths.
- Kyon sees Haruhi performing "God Knows" and "Lost My Music" with ENOZ.
Summary[]
With Haruhi handling promotion for the SOS Brigade's film by herself, Kyon, Taniguchi, and Kunikida browse the attractions in their school's Cultural Festival, including Asahina and Tsuruya's class's yakisoba (fried noodle) stall, which is drawing in a large number of male patrons due to how good hostess Tsuruya looks in her waitress outfit. Kyon peeks in on Koizumi's class play and Nagato's fortune telling booth but is disinterested in both.
Kyon, weary from editing the SOS Brigade's film all night, goes to the music concerts in hopes of getting some rest. He becomes sleepy, but wakes up when he sees one of the amateur bands, ENOZ, walking onto the stage with Haruhi and Nagato among them. Between songs, Haruhi informs the crowd that the four-member band's singer/guitarist Miyuki Enomoto and lead guitarist Takako Nakanishi could not be present, and so Haruhi and Nagato are acting as stand-ins. ENOZ's performance is enthusiastically received by the audience, including Koizumi and (begrudgingly) Kyon.
The next morning in class, Haruhi tells the full story to Kyon: Enomoto had amigdalitis and Nakanishi sprained her wrist and were forced not to play. Haruhi, realizing they had practiced so hard for this one performance, felt compassion and volunteered herself and Nagato to replace them. The actual band members come by to thank Haruhi, saying that thanks to their performance numerous requests have been coming in for their song recordings. Haruhi is uncomfortable with being thanked and requires Kyon to stand with her while she talks to them.
Haruhi runs off when lunch break arrives, and after eating Kyon goes looking for her. He finds her lying pensively in the quad, and she tells him she felt she was doing something meaningful during the band's performance and has felt restless ever since, leading Kyon to believe that she is rethinking her life due to the new experience of helping people. However, it turns out she just wants to start up her own rock band for next year's Cultural Festival, in addition to making a sequel to their movie.

Paranormal phenomena[]
Just before ENOZ's performance there weren't many people in the auditorium, but then it started to rain, forcing most of the students outside to seek shelter in the gym. The next day, Haruhi notes to Kyon that she had hoped for the sake of the band that lots of people would show up, suggesting the possibility that her power changed the weather.
Nagato learns how to proficiently play guitar in a moment, though it is unclear whether this was due to Haruhi wishing for her to be able to fill in with ENOZ or Nagato applying her data manipulation abilities.
Quotes[]
- Taniguchi: "We find a coupla girls dressed casual, kinda like those two, then we make with the chit-chat, and it's on. It's a tactic I developed over years of experience."
- Kyon: "What good is your experience when your success rate is zero?"
- Haruhi: "If I just had one more day to practice, I could've nailed it. Part of me's asking was it good enough, could it have been better, I don't know. How do I explain it? When I was up on that stage, I felt like I was really doing something. [moment of silence] This sucks. I mean, why can't I just forget about it already?"
- Kyon: "How should I know? But I do. It's because you're just not used to being appreciated by others. The things you do aren't things that people usually thank you for."
Trivia[]
- This episode was broadcast as episode 12 of Season 1, and as episode 26 of Season 2.
- Razor Ramon Hard Gay and Akihiro Miwa make an appearance, grabbing Kyon by his arms shortly after the opening.
- Kyon passes by a person wearing a Winnie-the-Pooh costume shortly after parting ways with Taniguchi and Kunikida, at approximately 7 1/2 minutes into the episode.
- Koizumi is acting in the play "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead".
- In the manga version, the play is instead a remake of "Hamlet" (which "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead" is a spin-off of), and in the light novels the play is never identified at all.
- In the original short story, Kyon does not visit Koizumi and Nagato's booths.
- ENOZ is based on the Japanese band ZONE. In the short story the band Haruhi and Nagato sit in with is unnamed and consists of just three members; the anime split the singer/guitarist into two different characters.
- During the festival "The Day of Sagittarius III" appears on a monitor and the Computer Research Club are at some computers, presumably playing it.
- The first time Kyon talks to Taniguchi and Kunikida, in the background Haruhi is talking to the band members of ENOZ (particularly when she first appeared to ENOZ to ask to stand-in for the singer and have Nagato as the guitarist).
- During one scene Haruhi and Nagato dressed in their costumes run by in the background, when Kyon talks to Taniguchi and Kunikida.
- The apparent dimensional travelers do not appear in the short story.
- The instruments used by ENOZ are:
- Haruhi (guitar): Italia Mondial Classic 2 Tone Sunburst.
- Yuki (guitar): Gibson SG Special Classic White (Limited Color).
- Mai (bass): Fender Precision Bass (Japan).
