Key events[]
- Haruhi discovers that their website is skewed.
- Emiri Kimidori asks the SOS Brigade to help look for her boyfriend, the Computer Research Society President.
- The Brigade searches in the President's apartment and finds a data life form presenting itself as the fear of the Computer Society's president: a camel cricket in an overlapping closed space.
- The Computer Research Society President informs the SOS Brigade that Kimidori is in fact not his girlfriend.
Summary[]
Haruhi makes a logo for the SOS Brigade and has Kyon put it on their website. The entire site becomes malformed as a result, and even reuploading fails to correct the issue.
In response to posters Kyon put up all over the school advertising counseling services, the SOS Brigade receives its first client, a junior named Emiri Kimidori. She asks them to investigate the disappearance of her boyfriend, the Computer Research Society's president. Though Haruhi rebuked Kyon for putting up the posters without her permission, he realizes she is excited about the SOS Brigade being an all-purpose advisory and investigative service.
When they get to the Computer Club President's apartment, they find no one there, and Haruhi gets bored and leaves. However, Nagato and Koizumi tell the rest of them to stay as they detect a strange presence. Nagato takes Kyon, Asahina, and Koizumi to a separate data space where a data lifeform shaped like a giant cave cricket appears. Nagato and Koizumi defeat it, the latter using a small amount of his power, and thus rescue the president of the Computer Club.
Nagato tells them that the lifeform came to Earth 280 million years ago and went into hibernation until Haruhi's logo appeared on the internet. It then spread hyperlinks to the SOS Brigade website, resulting in over 29,000 hits; most of these were after the logo became malformed, but eight people (including the president) viewed the true logo and become hosts for the lifeform. Nagato modifies Haruhi's logo to remove the danger. When asked, the Computer Club president tells Kyon he doesn't have a girlfriend, making Kyon suspect Kimidori was a pretend client set up by Nagato to alleviate Haruhi's boredom, or perhaps her own boredom.
Characters[]
Paranormal phenomena[]
Haruhi draws a simple image which contains approximately 436 petabytes of data.
The SOS Brigade enters a data space separate from the normal physical world and confront a data lifeform, with Nagato using data manipulation and Koizumi using esper powers, which is possible for him because the space was created using data from Haruhi. The data lifeform had been in hibernation for 280 million years, longer than is possible for any real world organism.
Koizumi reveals that the SOS Brigade clubroom is saturated with supernatural forces.
Quotes[]
- Kimidori: "The house was pitch black at night too. It worries me."
- Haruhi: "Ah. I understand how you feel."
- Kyon: "Liar. There's no way you'd understand love."
- Kyon: "Did she choose me as a member because just like these three, I have some insane superpower or crazy identity? What the hell am I? To put it straight, I'm the SOS Brigade's only good conscience. I'm in the SOS Brigade to stop Haruhi's illegal 'club activities' and make her live a normal high school life."
Trivia[]
- This episode was broadcast as episode 7 of Season 1, and episode 9 of Season 2.
- The official Haruhi Suzumiya website is based off the glitched web site in this episode, showing exactly 0029881 visitors.
- In the Japanese version, when asked for more details about her boyfriend, Kimidori says "He sounded like he got along really well with the SOS Brigade." before mentioning his membership in the Computer Research Society. The dubbed version omits the first statement, leaving a long silence in its place.
- As Koizumi is fighting, he shouts out "Fumoffu!" and "Second Raid!", both of which are a side story and sequel to Full Metal Panic!, another anime produced by Kyoto Animation.
- In this version the cricket is translated as "a camel cricket". However, in the other versions it is translated as "a cave cricket", another common name for the same animal.
- Nagato says, "Displaying statistics and current TCP/IP connections using NBT." in order to enter the cricket's space.
- In order to freeze the giant cricket, Nagato says, "Pausing interval seconds between display."
- The green drone beetle seen replenishing the cricket's HP (Health Points) is a parody of SEGA's arcade TCG (Trading Card Game), Mushi King.
- When Kimidori says the Computer Club's President's name, she starts with "Ya", but then the scene cuts to a cat meowing. This is not represented in the novels.
- A poster of Aya Hirano, Minori Chihara and Yuko Goto,[1] who voice Haruhi, Yuki and Mikuru in the original Japanese version, can be seen behind Kyon in the computer president's room.
