Remote Island Syndrome Part 2

Key events[]

Summary[]

Keiichi Tamaru, described by Koizumi as a wealthy, distant relative of his, allows the SOS Brigade and his brother Yutaka Tamaru to stay at his newly built island villa. Haruhi is so pleased that she promotes Koizumi to vice president of the SOS Brigade and declares that her role on the trip will be "supersleuth". Koizumi explains to Kyon that Haruhi recognizes the isolated island as a closed circle, a common feature in detective fiction in which the characters are isolated from the rest of the world, and thinks that if she enters it as a detective, she will inevitably be confronted with an interesting case.

Kyon's sister stows away on the trip and is happily welcomed by the SOS Brigade members, aside from Kyon. They ride a ferry to the port, where they are met by Tamaru's butler Arakawa and maid Sonou Mori, who take them by private boat to the island. The guests are each given their own room, all of which come with locking doors. Haruhi is increasingly frustrated at the lack of mysterious occurrences or circumstances, and alarms Kyon and Asahina by excitedly declaring that Asahina will be the first murder victim, since Haruhi's powers can make such a wish reality.

On their first day, they have fun on the beach, eat a lavish dinner cooked by Arakawa, and explore the woods. On the second day, they are trapped inside by a storm. Kyon notes the weather forecast said nothing about a storm the day before, indicating that Haruhi subconsciously created it to establish a closed circle. While waiting for the storm to pass, the guests play games indoors. The next morning, Yutaka is missing, and Keiichi isn't answering the phone in his room. Koizumi, Kyon, and Arakawa ram open the door to Keiichi's room and find Keiichi lying dead, a knife stabbed into his chest.

Differences from the light novel[]

"Remote Island Syndrome" is one of the few Haruhi Suzumiya story arcs in which the TV series significantly departs from the light novels. The premise of the story and the facts of the murder mystery remain unchanged, but how the mystery unravels is dramatically reworked to give Haruhi and Kyon more active roles, and numerous scenes were added.

Though both the original novelette and the TV episode begin in media res, they do so at drastically different points. The novelette begins with the discovery of the murder, roughly 2/3 of the way into the text, while this episode begins with the SOS Brigade on the boat headed to the island. Kyon's sister joins the trip to the island in the episode, though the scene in which Kyon finds her in his bag is unchanged.

The sequences in which the SOS Brigade drink wine and Kyon, Haruhi, and Mikuru get hangovers are omitted. In exchange, the Old Maid scene is considerably expanded (and Kyon rather than Koizumi is the loser), and scenes were added with the SOS Brigade lighting fireworks, exploring the island, playing "Truth or Dare?", and having a pillow fight.

Paranormal phenomena[]

The typhoon is indicated to have been created by Haruhi to fulfill her wish for an isolated location.

Quotes[]

Koizumi: "To encounter a surrealistic case like in mystery novels, you must first head to a fitting place. Because fictional supersleuths get involved in cases that way."
Kyon: "We wouldn't just stumble across a case."
Koizumi: "It's true reality doesn't happen like fiction. But where we're heading right now is what society would consider the perfect setting for a murder."

Kyon: "Why would Miss Asahina want to take pictures of me sleeping? Maybe she wants to put a picture of me in a cute frame, keep it next to her bed, and every night, just before she drifts off to sleep, she -"
Haruhi: "What's with the goofy face? You might want to stop, cause you look like a moron. I've temporarily given Mikuru the responsibility of being the SOS Brigade's photographer. It's important to maintain a record of the Brigade's activities for future generations. But I decide what pictures to take."
Kyon: "Why would anybody care what I look like when I'm sleeping or when I'm waking up?"
Haruhi: "While you're sleeping, the rest of us are on an important mission, and I'm going to use the pictures of you loafing as a warning to future generations!"

Haruhi: "Then, #2, turn around, look back at us, and say, 'I love you.'"
Nagato: [faces away, then turns around] "I love you."
Haruhi: "That's not it, Yuki! You have to be more emotional."
Nagato: [faces away, then turns around] "I love you."
Haruhi: "Kyon, show her."
Kyon: "Why me?"
Haruhi: "It doesn't matter why. It's the king's orders."
Kyon: [faces away, then turns around] "I lo-"
Haruhi: "Never mind."
[everyone laughs at Kyon]
Kyon: "What a selfish king. Wait, that's how she usually is."

Trivia[]

  • This episode was broadcast as episode 6 of Season 1, and episode 10 of Season 2.
  • Chronologically ordered, this is the first episode in which Nagato appears in any other attire than her North High uniform.
  • In the subtitled version, Kyon asks Asahina to take good care of his sister. In the dubbed version, he instead simply promises his sister won't be any trouble on the trip.
