"Someday in the Rain" is an episode of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime. Though originally broadcast as episode 9 of season 1, it is the last episode of the series in the in-universe chronology, and so functions as the season 2 finale.
"Someday in the Rain" was not based on any story from the light novels, making it the only original episode of the anime. It also stands out as the only episode which is not from Kyon's perspective.
Key events[]
- Haruhi decides the SOS Brigade needs a heater during the winter. The store they advertised in the Adventures of Mikuru film has promised them one in return for an advertising spot in their next film, and she sends Kyon to retrieve it.
- Haruhi takes more pictures of Mikuru Asahina.
- Kyon returns and falls asleep.
- Kyon awakes to realize that Haruhi had been waiting for him to leave. He also discovers two cardigans on him used as blankets, one of them left by Haruhi.
- Kyon and Haruhi walk home together under an umbrella as Kyon discovers a playful side of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Summary[]
With winter setting in, and the thin walls of the cultural department clubhouse providing little protection from the chill at SOS Brigade meetings, Haruhi orders Kyon to pick up a heater which electronics shop owner Jirou Oomurei offered her for free. Kyon objects to the arduous errand but ultimately agrees, inwardly admitting that this is reasonable request and that he too had been bothered by the cold. As he heads out, Asahina lends Kyon her scarf. With him gone, Haruhi takes the opportunity to do a project he objected to: taking pictures of Asahina in various costumes for the movie's DVD cover and extras. Koizumi holds the reflector board, and Nagato is left alone to read. Haruhi, Asahina, and Koizumi move on to the gym for more photos.
Kyon picks up the heater, and Oomurei mentions to him that he considers the heater an advance payment for the movie's sequel. Kyon realizes that Haruhi got the free heater in exchange for another commercial in the sequel. When Kyon returns, he bumps into Tsuruya, who sees he is wearing Asahina's scarf and incorrectly concludes he was running the errand for Asahina. He finds only Nagato in the club room, and she does not answer when he asks where the others are (even though she directed Tsuruya to their location). He sets up the heater and falls asleep waiting for the others.
Kyon is woken by Haruhi (the only other student who hasn't gone home) putting her cardigan on him to keep him warm. Haruhi is mortified at being caught, but Kyon is more interested in the fact that there are two cardigans on him, and wonders who the second cardigan belongs to. Haruhi is in a good mood as she and Kyon share an umbrella on the walk home through the rain.

- This episode was written by Nagaru Tanigawa, the original author of the light novels. It was the only episode to have been written by Tanigawa. The script written was published in the August 2006 edition of The Sneaker.
- Haruhi's phone is a Sony Ericsson Premini-II Silver.
- Kyon and Itsuki are playing Dragon All Stars.
- Yuki Nagato does not speak in this episode, despite getting a lot of screen time. Her Japanese and English voice actors were not listed in the ending credits.
- Students wearing the Kouyouen uniform appear in this episode (on the train).
- This episode's title is later referenced in the title of episode 10 from The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan.
