Summary[]

The SOS Brigade previews their movie of questionable quality, directed by Haruhi Suzumiya. In the movie, Mikuru Asahina stars as a time-traveling waitress from the future who has been sent to protect a young man, played by Itsuki Koizumi, who is unaware that he has great esper powers. In her civilian identity she works as a hawker for local produce shops. She must engage in fights with an alien-magician, played by Yuki Nagato, who wants to obtain Itsuki's powers. Yuki uses her magic to take control of Mikuru's friend Tsuruya and two other innocent people (played by Kunikida and Taniguchi), making them throw Mikuru into a lake. Itsuki pulls out Mikuru and takes her back to his home after she faints. There Itsuki and Mikuru become romantically involved, and she moves in with him. Yuki tries to persuade Itsuki to ally with her, and a love triangle ensues with both Mikuru and Yuki transferring into Itsuki's school and striving for his affections. At length Yuki challenges Mikuru to a final battle and defeats her. However, Itsuki intervenes, and when Yuki tries to seize his power, his esper abilities awaken and he uses them to blast Yuki into outer space. The film ends with Yuki and Itsuki resuming their romance.

Throughout the film Kyon provides narration, the nature of which is unclear. Most of the time it seems to be an audio commentary explaining the film's story, which is otherwise difficult to follow due to Haruhi's haphazard plotting, a shortage of dialogue in key stage-setting scenes, and Kyon's own editing, which leaves in a number of bloopers (even ones which follow Haruhi yelling "Cut!"). However, at times Kyon talks as though commenting on a scene as it is being filmed.

After screening the completed film, Kyon is horrified at its amateur quality, while Haruhi is enthusiastic and begins talking of doing a sequel.

Paranormal phenomena[]

Shamisen talks during the movie's final scene.

Quotes[]

Nagato: "Itsuki Koizumi, you should not be making the choice of that female. You must choose me instead, for the true potential of your hidden powers will only be realized when they mingle with my power."
Koizumi: "Please explain exactly what you mean by that!"
Nagato: "All I can tell you at this very moment is that you have two choices before you right now. The first choice is to be with me and to make this universe evolve into what it should be, and the second is to be with her, but that will only destroy the future."
Kyon: "Itsuki was worried now. More than he ever was. But what Nagato - I mean, Yuki - what she said just now... she was talking about him, right?"

Koizumi: "I understand that he - no, in this scene it's me, so I - I am a kind of a key, and a key all by itself does not have any power whatsoever. And a key is nothing but a tool with which you can open the door. And when that door is finally opened, something is going to change, and I know that what will change is... [looks towards prompter] ...That's about all I understand, Yuki."

Koizumi: "Yuki, enough. Stop it."
Shamisen: "You needn't think."
Kyon: "Hey, Shamisen, stop talking! Stop talking!"
Shamisen: "Just do away with that boy's thoughts. From the look of it, you have such powers, don't -" [Nagato raps him on the head with her prop wand]
Nagato: [looking at the camera] "That was ventriloquism."

Trivia[]

  • This episode was broadcast as episode 1 of Season 1, and as episode 25 of Season 2.
  • An error is made where Mikuru's envelope disappears for a short amount of time. This is most likely due to Haruhi's directing.
  • The Limited Edition DVD contains an extra scene.
  • In the scene where Mikuru does the endorsement ad for their model shop sponsor, Keiji Yamatsuchi, some model boxes can be recognized to be ones sold in real life, the most obvious one being the Perfect Grade GAT-X105 Strike Gundam from Gundam SEED (the rectangular white box) directly above Mikuru's head. Mikuru is also seen firing a BB gun model of a Russian Assault rifle, the AK-47.
  • The cat-men motif sometimes seen throughout The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was originally drawn by Haruhi voice actor Aya Hirano on the backside of scripts. Staff members discovered the sketches and incorporated them into the anime. Variations of the cat-men illustrations could be seen throughout Haruhi Suzumiya merchandise (namely CDs and DVDs).
  • Most of the characters in the film are named the same as the respective actors who portray them, but in the credits, the characters' given names are written in katakana instead of kanji, while the actors' given and family names are both written in kanji.
  • Kyon's Sister is credited in the film as simply "Kyon's sister". Though Kyon expresses uncertainty as to who she is supposed to be in the film, her credited role is Itsuki's sister. Curiously, the credits also note that this is her debut film appearance, even though none of the actors had appeared in a movie before.
  • Though the series never shows how the music for the film was composed and recorded, it is credited to Haruhi and Kyon during the end credits. The opening theme is specifically credited as composed and arranged by Haruhi.
  • The title of the intended sequel, "The Revenge of Yuki Nagato Episode 00", in Japanese is Nagato Yuki no Gyakushū.
