Summary[]

A month into the school year, Haruhi Suzumiya decides that the SOS Brigade needs a computer in their clubroom. She blackmails the Computer Research Society into giving her a computer and running a LAN cable between their clubrooms for Internet access by forcing their president's hand onto Mikuru Asahina's breast and taking photos, threatening to use them as evidence of sexual harassment. Despite this, Asahina is unwilling to quit the SOS Brigade. She says that she's worried about Nagato's presence and flirts with Kyon, telling him to call her by her given name, and later asks if he'd be willing to marry her if no one else would.

At Haruhi's order, Kyon creates a website for the SOS Brigade during lunch break. Nagato, who is in the clubroom even during lunch, lends Kyon a book.

Despite his objections to the SOS Brigade's aimlessness, Kyon finds himself eagerly showing up for each meeting. At one meeting, Haruhi produces a policy statement for the SOS Brigade, stating their goal as investigating paranormal phenomena. She forces Asahina into a bunny girl costume. Haruhi and Asahina, both in costume, hand out fliers about the SOS Brigade at the main gate. Teachers put a stop to this and the girls are given detention. The incident makes the SOS Brigade the talk of the school, but prompts no emails to the SOS Brigade about paranormal mysteries. Haruhi expresses frustration at this, but Kyon is convinced that Haruhi is intelligent enough to realize that it's unrealistic to expect to find paranormal mysteries in this way, and that her behavior is motivated by unfocused adolescent energy. After she leaves, Nagato asks Kyon if he has read the book. He says no and Nagato tells him to read it as soon as he gets home.

Kyon arrives home and skims through the book. A bookmark falls out with a request to meet at the park across from Kouyo Station at 7 PM written on it. He rides to meet Nagato. She confirms she waited yesterday as well. She leads him to her apartment, where she lives alone. She says that she arranged the meeting to tell him that she and Haruhi are not normal humans, and that she is an alien created by the Data Integration Thought Entity for the purpose of making contact with organic life forms.

Quotes[]

Haruhi: "Hey, Kyon! Can you think of anything else we're gonna need right now?"
Kyon: "What do you mean?"
Haruhi: "I wanna get my hands on a mysterious transfer student! What do you think of that?"
Kyon: "I beg you... please start the conversation by making the context clear."
Haruhi: "It's exactly what the SOS Brigade needs! We need something like a mysterious transfer student!"
Kyon: "Okay, before you kidnap anyone else, what do you mean by 'mysterious'?"
Haruhi: "Check it out: school started less than two months ago, right? So I'm thinkin' that anybody who transfers into our school right now has to be mysterious. Am I right?"
Kyon: "Maybe the kid's dad got relocated because of work."
Haruhi: "Oh, work with me here! It's not normal!"
Kyon: "I'd sorta like to know what you consider "normal," but I'm almost afraid to ask."

Yuki Nagato: "There might be discrepancies in the transmission of data."

Yuki: "I am not referring to the absence of universally accepted personality traits; what I mean is literal, in that she and I are not the same as ordinary human beings. Human beings such as yourself."

[Mikuru comes out of the clubroom after changing into her school uniform from the bunny girl outfit.]
Mikuru Asahina: "Um, say Kyon, if I find I'm unable to get married after all this, would you be willing to marry me?" [Walks off]
Kyon: [Thinking] "What should I say? 'Miss Asahina, you look like you just found out you didn't get accepted into college'? Or, 'like someone who's lost her job the day after buying their dream house'? Wait, oh man, now you're calling me 'Kyon', too."

Kyon: [Narrating] "By the next day, the name 'Haruhi Suzumiya' had become infamous. Now everyone at school was talking about her."
Taniguchi: "Hey there, Kyon. Hate to say it, but it looks like you've gone and done it. You've become one of Suzumiya's gang of weirdos huh?"
Kyon: "Oh, shut up. [Thinking] The sucky thing about being a part of all this is that my name and Miss Asahina's name are now floating around campus, too."
Kunikida: "I couldn't believe what I was seeing yesterday. A couple of bunny girls hanging by the school's main gate. I mean, the girl in red was Mikuru Asahina, wasn't it?"
Taniguchi: "Now everybody in school's talking about you guys, Kyon. Everybody."
Ryoko: "What exactly is this SOS Brigade?"
Kyon: "You're gonna have to ask Suzumiya. I really don't know. I don't even wanna know."
Ryoko: "Well, it definitely looks like you guys are having a lot of fun, but you know, yesterday's stunt was a little overboard."

Trivia[]

  • This episode was broadcast as episode 3 of Season 1, and as episode 2 of Season 2.
  • Haruhi's blackmailing of the Computer Society is considerably changed from the light novel. In the light novel, Haruhi fills Kyon in on her plan in advance, and he takes the photos for her while she focuses on forcing Mikuru and the president into position. In the TV episode, Kyon has no foreknowledge of nor participation in Haruhi's plan.
  • Similarly, the timing of Kyon's appointment with Yuki is changed. In the anime, it occurs before Itsuki Koizumi is introduced to the SOS Brigade, while in the light novel, it happens afterwards.
  • The book that Yuki lends Kyon is a Japanese translation of Hyperion, by Dan Simmons. In the light novel, Kyon never identifies the book, describing it only as a thick science fiction novel.
  • In the English dubbed version, Kyon tells his sister that he is going to meet someone at the station. In the subtitled version, he omits this information, simply answering her question about where he is going directly: "The station."
