Summary[]
Yuki Nagato explains to Kyon that the Data Integration Thought Entity has been observing humans since they developed the quality of wisdom, which is unique on a universal scale and can possibly end the Thought Entity's developmental stagnation. Three years ago it witnessed an explosion of data that spread over the globe from Haruhi Suzumiya, who has the power to manipulate reality and may be the key to humankind's auto-evolution. Because the Data Integration Thought Entity does not communicate through language, while humans can only communicate through language, it created superficially human creatures like Nagato, called Humanoid Interfaces, in order to contact humans. However, a majority of the Thought Entity anticipates catastrophe if Haruhi is informed of her powers, so it continues to only observe. Nagato contacted Kyon because Haruhi chose him as her companion for some undetermined reason, and there are elements of the Thought Entity which wish to actively experiment with Haruhi's powers, potentially by harming Kyon. Kyon is skeptical of Nagato's story, believing it a delusion inspired by the science fiction novels she reads.
Haruhi recruits a freshman transfer student named Itsuki Koizumi to the SOS Brigade, reasoning that anyone who transfers during the early months of school is mysterious. Haruhi now says the Brigade's purpose is to find aliens, time travelers, and espers and have fun with them. She forces Mikuru Asahina into a maid costume to increase the club's moe factor, and has Kyon take photos while she makes Asahina pose. Kyon rebukes Haruhi for her abuse of Asahina, even as he acknowledges his complicity in it, while Koizumi and Nagato make no effort to curb Haruhi's behavior at all.
Due to the lack of e-mails reporting paranormal phenomena, Haruhi orders the SOS Brigade to meet on Saturday to search the city for them. They draw straws to split into groups, with Kyon paired off with Asahina. Asahina reveals to Kyon she is a time traveler from the future assigns to monitor Haruhi in case she causes time disruptions, and that she knows Nagato and Koizumi have similar roles. They draw straws again at lunch, and Kyon is paired off with Nagato. He takes her to a library and falls asleep. He is woken by an angry call from Haruhi, who has been waiting a half hour at the assigned meeting point, and rushes Nagato out to meet with her; he has to get Nagato a library card because she refuses to leave without the book she was in the middle of. Haruhi admonishes Kyon for not finding anything and says they will discuss his behavior at Monday's meeting.
Kyon shows up at the clubroom early on Monday to confront Koizumi, who admits he is an esper working for a secret Agency. He says that aliens, time travelers, and espers exist only because Haruhi wishes for them to exist, and that she created the world they know three years ago. Angering or upsetting Haruhi may cause her to make the world cease to exist. Despite her earlier threat, Haruhi never shows up to the meeting.

- Koizumi says he was originally not supposed to transfer to North High, but unexpected circumstances forced him to, suggesting that when Haruhi wished for a mysterious transfer student in the previous episode, she subconsciously caused the circumstances that forced Koizumi to transfer.
- Everyone parked their bikes in a "NO PARKING" zone, but Kyon is the only one to get his bike confiscated, possibly in a manifestation of Haruhi's anger with him.

- In the subtitled version, when Kyon heads off with Asahina for the city search, Haruhi admonishes him "This isn't a date!", implying she sensed his thoughts about being paired up with Asahina. The dubbed version drops this, with Haruhi simply warning him to take the search seriously.
- Kyon's phone is a Panasonic FOMA 902i Rubber Black.
- The characters are seen eating at "WcDonald's." This is a clear reference to the fast food corporation McDonald's.
