The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part 6 is the 6th episode that was broadcasted as the 14th episode that aired on July 2, 2006. Haruhi unknowingly brings Kyon to her new world.
Key events[]
- At night, Haruhi unconsciously brings Kyon with her into a new world she created, intending to destroy the old world.
- Kyon gets Haruhi and him out by kissing her.
- After returning to the normal world, Haruhi thinks these events were only a dream.
Summary[]
To avoid the spread of false rumors or discovery of the truth, Kyon tells Taniguchi that he and Nagato were on the floor together after school because Nagato fainted due to chronic anemia and he caught her. Taniguchi does not swallow this story, and tells Kyon that he has lost all chance of being seen as normal anyway due to his association with Haruhi Suzumiya. Nonetheless, the two remain friends.
At the SOS Brigade meeting, Kyon indulges in the contents of his hidden "Mikuru" folder. Mikuru Asahina sees he has a folder with her name on it, leading to a flirtatious struggle as Kyon tries to prevent her opening the folder. When Haruhi sees Kyon wrestling with Asahina, Asahina fearfully withdraws. Haruhi announces her intention to change clothes, but Kyon makes no move to leave. She is insulted and infuriated by this and kicks him out of the room, a marked change from her previous indifference to changing in the presence of boys. Once the meeting calms, Kyon reflects that he is content with most days being "normal", but Haruhi is not.
That night, Kyon and Haruhi wake up inside a small closed space, encompassing only the North High grounds. Haruhi is surprised. After confirming they cannot leave the closed space or reach the outside world by phone, she has Kyon wait while she investigates. Koizumi arrives and tells Kyon that they are in the closed space because Haruhi has decided to move on to a new world, and Kyon is the only thing she wishes to retain from the old world. The espers could barely enter the closed space, and presume this is an end-of-the-world crisis, since they have no assurance Haruhi will let the old world remain. Before fading, Koizumi tells him that Asahina said it was all her fault, and Nagato said to turn on the computer. When he does, a DOS script from Nagato ends with "sleeping beauty".
A Celestial begins destroying the school, but far from being scared, Haruhi is gripped by excitement, convinced the celestial is not evil and that she is having the strange and wonderful experience she always wanted. Kyon tries to talk her out of this on technical grounds, like the lack of food within the closed space and the absence of the people they know, but Haruhi assures him that they will have everything they need and everyone they knew before will be with them; things will only be more exciting. He confesses that he likes the old world, and tells Haruhi that exciting things have been happening all around her, and the old world is already becoming interesting enough for her desires. He then asks himself what Haruhi means to him and, prompted by the "Snow White" and "Sleeping Beauty" clues, he tells Haruhi how much he liked the sight of her with a ponytail and kisses her. He is returned to his bed.
Kyon is concerned that he may in fact have failed to convince Haruhi, and that he and Haruhi are living in a new world as the sole survivors of the old one; Koizumi and Nagato are both unable to reassure him on this point. Haruhi believes the whole closed space incident to have been a nightmare, but puts her hair in a ponytail. Kyon submits the SOS Brigade's application to be an official club.
Koizumi, Nagato, and Asahina all make excuses to not join the SOS Brigade's second citywide search, and Kyon shows up an hour early so that Haruhi will be forced to pay for their meal. He plans to talk to her about aliens, espers, and time travelers.

Kyon informs Asahina about her mole, which he himself only learned about from her older self.
Quotes[]
- Kyon: "Why is it that I'm here?"
- Koizumi: "You really have no idea why? You were chosen by Miss Suzumiya. You're the only one she wanted to be with from this universe."
- Koizumi: "You're the new Adam and Eve. Go on, procreate, increase the population."
- Kyon: "I'll punch you for that."
- Kyon: "No matter what I say, I really liked the life I had up to now. Stupid Taniguchi and Kunikida... Koizumi, Nagato, Miss Asahina... I can even add in the missing Asakura."
- Haruhi: "What are you saying?"
- Kyon: "I want to see them all again. I feel I have so much more to say to them."
- Haruhi: "You'll see them. It's not like this world will be enveloped in shadow forever. When tomorrow comes, I'm sure the sun will rise. I can tell."
- Koizumi: "Well, I don't think we can deny the distinct possibility that the world we're in now was freshly created by her last night. In any case, it is an honor to see you and Miss Suzumiya again. Be seeing you after class!"
- Kyon: [Narrating] "Self-proclaimed humanoid interface created by aliens. Self-proclaimed [mimics Asahina's voice] time-traveling girl. Self-proclaimed squad of esper boys. They've shown me enough proof that I may now safely remove the words 'self-proclaimed' from their titles. The three of them, each for their own reasons, mind you, are currently focused on Haruhi Suzumiya. Even if I believe everything I've seen, I still can't figure out one thing: why me? An alien, a girl from the future, and an esper boy all migrated toward Haruhi because, as Koizumi put it, that's what she wished for. What about me? Why have I been dragged feet-first into all this weird stuff, anyway? I mean, I'm a 100% ordinary high-schooler. No special powers or anything here. I mean, who wrote this scenario? Was it you, Haruhi? Yeah, right. It's not like it's my problem anyway. Why do I have to get all worked up about it? All of this is Haruhi's fault. Seriously, she's the one who should be worried about all this weirdness going on, not me. Nagato, Koizumi, Miss Asahina; from now on, they should just go speak to her directly, and whatever happens after that, well, that's Haruhi's problem; I've got nothing to do with it. Everyone else can go do whatever they want, as far as I'm concerned."
Trivia[]
- This episode was broadcast as episode 14 of Season 1, and episode 6 of Season 2.
- Kyon and Koizumi both say they can't discount the possibility that this world was newly created the night before. This is because with the exceptions of Haruhi and Kyon, everyone would have been re-created with memories that are consistent with both the reality of the new world and the past events of the old world, including Haruhi and Kyon's departure from the old world. As for Kyon, he would likely have difficulty identifying any differences in the new world, given Haruhi's promise that everyone he knew before would still be around. However, Ockham's Razor suggests that Haruhi and Kyon did return to the old world. The abruptness of their departure from closed space is particularly suggestive of this; Koizumi and Haruhi's comments both imply that the transition from closed space to the new world would be more gradual.
- The opening airs as part of the ending credits. The ending theme does not air at all.
- The music that plays during the climax of this episode is from the first part ("Veni, Creator Spiritus") of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8. The symphony in its entirety links a Latin hymn (the aforementioned "Veni, Creator Spiritus", or "Come, Creator Spirit") and a setting of the closing words of Goethe's Faust. Both parts share a common theme, redemption through the power of love, which fits with the events of this episode. Additionally, the words "Veni, Veni creator spiritus" ("Come, Come creator spirit") are sung at the exact moment of the kiss.
- After Kyon wakes up from his dream, he refers to Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis who Mahler had sought for advice on his relationship after the premiere of the aforementioned Symphony No. 8.
- In both the light novel and the manga, Haruhi's hair is too short to form a ponytail after she cut it, so following the incident in closed space she puts her hair in a topknot instead, leaving Kyon to wonder if her intent was to do her best approximation of a ponytail. In the anime she makes a respectable ponytail even with her hair cut short.
