Summary[]
Kyon worries about the SOS Brigade's film-making endeavor, concerned that Asahina may be harmed by Haruhi's designs and not trusting Haruhi's statement that she obtained their camera and airsoft guns with no strings attached.
Haruhi distributes the casting list for the SOS Brigade's short film, with the main characters' roles eerily matching their actual nature. Koizumi is confident that this is nothing to worry about, and that Haruhi fully understands the difference between fiction and reality. Haruhi forces Asahina into a waitress uniform as her costume for the film, and when Nagato shows up to the meeting in her costume for her class's fortune-telling project, Haruhi decides it is perfectly suited for Nagato's role, which she modifies from evil alien to evil alien witch.
Taniguchi and Kunikida discuss the Cultural Festival, lamenting that after the departure of Ryouko Asakura no one has stepped into a class leadership role and come up with an interesting festival project for them. They prod Kyon for info on what the SOS Brigade is up to, but Kyon is evasive. Taniguchi also says he has now concluded that the reason why Kyon was on the floor with Nagato back in "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part 4" was that Haruhi directed them to do so as a prank on Taniguchi, to Kyon's relief.
On the first day of filming, the club shoots two commercials advertising their sponsors, and on Saturday they film several scenes in a park. Kyon now realizes that Haruhi obtained the camera and guns by promising the commercials. Koizumi confesses to Kyon that he is having trouble remembering his lines for his class's theater project and would like to trade the male lead role in the SOS Brigade film to Kyon, but is too afraid of Haruhi to request this. Kyon has no such fears, and relentlessly criticizes Haruhi's directorial decisions, particularly that she doesn't have a written script and is planning on ironing out the plot in the editing phase. Asahina is uncomfortable with how revealing her costume is and has to be constantly exhorted by Haruhi to show more confidence. Despite all this discontent, Haruhi herself remains in an unshakeable good mood and enjoys the filming.

- This episode begins mid-conversation, picking up after the previous episode's abrupt end.
- In the dubbed version of the episode, the electronics store owner erroneously says that he first saw Asahina "yesterday". In the subtitled version, he correctly identifies it as the day before yesterday.
- Although the timing is the same, the positions of several objects have changed compared to Adventures of Mikuru Asahina. One significant change is the commercial filmed for Ohmori Electronics - this episode shows the first take with Mikuru in her waitress outfit; Adventures of Mikuru Asahina shows the second take with Mikuru in her bunny-girl outfit.
- In the subtitled version of the episode, Kyon says that Haruhi would be as cute as Asahina if she just sat there without thinking or talking. The dubbed version tweaks this to the more politically correct statement that Haruhi would be as cute as Asahina if she were more pleasant towards other people.
- When Haruhi informs the members of the SOS Brigade of their roles, Kyon does a monologue questioning if it's his fault. This is likely a reference to his telling Haruhi about the identities of the members of the SOS Brigade in The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya Part 5. The light novel makes it explicit that this is what Kyon is referring to.
