Key Events[]
- The SOS Brigade continue with their movie-making endeavor.
- Haruhi forces Asahina to emit a Mikuru Beam from the eye with a colored contact lens, but Nagato intervenes by shielding with her hand.
- Koizumi reveals that Haruhi's desire to have a Mikuru Beam became real.
- The Brigade enlists Taniguchi, Kunikida, and Tsuruya to act as "minions" for Nagato.
Summary[]
The SOS Brigade films a shot of Nagato felling Asahina with magic. Kyon signals Nagato not to use actual magic (i.e. data manipulation) on Asahina, so she just waves her wand. Haruhi is disappointed at this and orders Kyon to add a CG effect for Nagato's spell in post-production.
They next try to shoot a scene of Asahina heroically running through a flock of white pigeons, but the pigeons at the nearby shrine are grey, and Asahina cowers on the ground when Haruhi fires the prop guns to make the pigeons fly towards her. The SOS Brigade are then chased off the shrine grounds by a priest, preventing them from doing a second take. Kyon also fears the priest will recognize Koizumi's North High uniform (which he is wearing as his costume, since his part is an esper high school student) and report them to the school, but Haruhi is unworried, pointing out that the North High uniform is not distinctive enough to identify at a glance.
Haruhi reveals that her concept for the film is for the timid Asahina to go through great struggles and suffering, in order to make the eventual happy ending more satisfying. When Koizumi asks if there will be any actors in the film other than just Asahina, Nagato, and himself, Haruhi is inspired to recruit people to play Nagato's minions.
Haruhi insists on a tight filming schedule, including working on Saturday and Sunday. Displeased with the battle sequence, she conjures the idea of Asahina shooting laser beams from the blue contact lens on her left eye. During filming of the scene, Asahina actually fires deadly beams. Nagato protects Kyon and tackles Asahina to remove the contact lens and hide it from Haruhi, who adapts the film's plot to account for Asahina not having the contact lens in every scene.
The SOS Brigade works until showdown, finishing Saturday's filming by shooting footage of Asahina's everyday life in the park and the downtown area, wearing her "normal" clothes of a bunnygirl outfit.
Recognizing that Haruhi's wish for a laser beam caused the earlier incident, Koizumi brings Nagato over to Asahina's house that night and has her inject nanomachines to counter the effect on Asahina. Despite this, Asahina is so distraught over the incident that she calls in sick Sunday morning. Haruhi is not fooled and goes over to Asahina's house to drag her to the meeting place. Haruhi adds Tsuruya, Taniguchi, and Kunikida as extras in the film, Kyon having lured Taniguchi and Kunikida in with the promise that they will see Asahina in a waitress costume. She declares that they will be shooting at a lake near Koizumi's house.
Characters[]
Paranormal phenomena[]
Haruhi's wish for a "Mikuru Beam" causes Asahina's contact lens to fire photon beams.
To protect Kyon, Nagato moves at superhuman speed and projects an invisible shield around her body.
Off-screen, Nagato bites Asahina to inject nanomachines that prevent further photon beams from being produced by her body.
Haruhi hears Kyon's unspoken complaint about having to work on the movie on Sunday.
Quotes[]
- Kyon: "You gotta be kidding! Miss Asahina was just shooting particle beams out of her eye!"
- Nagato: "It wasn't a particle beam. Cohesive beam."
- Kyon: "Laser, maser, marker-light FAHP, whatever! They're all the same to us normals! The thing I'm having trouble with is that she has the ability to fire heat rays."
- Nagato: "It's not a heat ray. Photon laser."
- Kyon: "The idea of 'permission to shoot' doesn't exist in Haruhi's mind, so Haruhi was 'free' to just shoot whatever and wherever she wanted to. This is a dignified freedom, in the same vein as the papal freedom of action practiced in the time of Pope Innocent III. ...Or so I'm told."
- Taniguchi: "On the way back from the convenience store one night, a taxi passed me. And I glanced at its 'available car' light, but it looked like 'beloved car' to me."
- Kunikida: "That's surprising."
- Taniguchi: "But before I could take another look at it, it drove off. And that's when I realized that maybe what I'm missing in my life is love."
Trivia[]
- This episode was the 22nd episode broadcast for Season 2, but was the twelfth new episode.
- In the dubbed version of the episode, Kyon tells Koizumi to help them look for the contact lens. In the subtitled version, he instead tells Koizumi to act like he's looking for the contact lens, obviously assuming that Haruhi is not listening.
- In the subtitled version of the episode, Kyon erroneously refers to Pope Innocent III as Pope Innocence III.
- The tune Haruhi hums at 18:37 bears resemblance to Arrivano I Marines, the marching theme of the Red Shoulders Special Operation AT regiment that appears in VOTOMS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDZAz_olO-s).
