The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00

Key events[]

  • The SOS Brigade continue with their movie-making endeavor and attempt to come up with a plan to make Haruhi realize the movie is just fiction, so that the fiction and reality will not mesh.
  • Asahina and Koizumi express their mutually exclusive views on the nature of Haruhi Suzumiya.
  • Kyon persuades Haruhi to record a disclaimer which plays over the credits.
  • Kyon discovers his plan has worked, and everything is back to normal.
  • Kyon tells Haruhi that Nagato, Asahina, and Koizumi are an alien, time traveler, and esper, respectively, but Haruhi doesn't believe him.

Summary[]

Nagato takes the SOS Brigade to a garden behind her house where stray cats gather. Haruhi picks a male calico, names him Shamisen, and entrusts his care to Kyon. She remarks that because he is Nagato's familiar, they should have him talk. After Haruhi leaves, Shamisen begins to talk to Kyon. Koizumi infers that Haruhi has begun subconsciously confusing the fantasy of the film with reality, and thanks to the power boost she received from her reconciliation with Kyon in the previous episode, this will change their everyday reality unless they somehow get Haruhi to see the film world as purely fiction. Kyon instructs Shamisen not to talk in the house; he complies.

The next day Asahina approaches Kyon between classes to give him a coupon for the yakisoba cafe her class is running, and to privately tell him that she disbelieves Koizumi's claim that Haruhi's power can change everyday reality; rather, she asserts that there have always been aliens, espers, time travelers, and talking cats, and Haruhi merely has the ability to intuitively find them. She repeatedly emphasizes that she is not speaking out of enmity towards Koizumi. Kyon tells her he believes her theory is the correct one, but privately consults Nagato about the matter. Nagato says that there is no way of proving which theory is true, and neither Koizumi nor Asahina can accept the other's theory because it negates their own existence. She also refuses to tell which theory she herself subscribes to.

Koizumi confronts Kyon privately after school and tells him that the various paranormal factions are constantly at war behind the scenes. He also tells him that Asahina joined the SOS Brigade and behaves pitiably hapless against Haruhi, in order to manipulate Kyon, and through him Haruhi. However, he backs off from this claim when Kyon reacts with anger.

Haruhi continues to be enthusiastic about the filming as Asahina's prop guns fire water bullets, the cherry blossoms fall, and the white pigeons turn into formerly extinct passenger pigeons. To stop this, Kyon persuades Haruhi to record a voice over disclaimer that the events of the film are purely fictional during the credits. Kyon concludes that his idea worked when Shamisen stops talking.

The editing of the film is left for the day before the Cultural Festival, so Kyon and Haruhi stay at the school overnight to get it done, but they both fall asleep. When they awake, the editing is mysteriously complete, visual effects and all. Haruhi assumes that Kyon did it, since she fell asleep before he did, and praises his work. The SOS Brigade watch the film together in private, then screen it at the Cultural Festival.

In a flashback to May, Kyon meets Haruhi at a cafe and tells her that Nagato is an alien, Asahina a time traveler, and Koizumi an esper, but she doesn't believe him and storms out.

Characters[]

Paranormal phenomena[]

To create the desired reality of her film, Haruhi gives Shamisen the ability to talk, makes Asahina's contact lens fire blades, causes the prop guns to fire water bullets, and turns white pigeons into passenger pigeons.

People from a medieval fantasy world appear at the Cultural Festival.

The film's editing is mysteriously completed overnight, most likely by working of Haruhi's powers. (Kyon's suggestion that Nagato or Koizumi most likely did it doesn't hold up to the evidence, since when he awoke his face was resting on the computer keyboard. Neither Nagato nor Koizumi could have done the editing without moving Kyon's face off the keyboard, and they would have had no reason to put his face back on the keyboard when they were done.)

Quotes[]

Kyon: "Good work. I'll buy you a can of cat food in a bit. Or would you prefer dried sardines?"
Shamisen: "I'm okay with either."
Kyon: "Hey now, was that you, Nagato? I was asking the cat."
Shamisen: "That was my understanding. That's why I answered."

Kyon: "Okay, don't say a single word in the house. Act like a cat, got it?"
Shamisen: "I don't know what 'like a cat' means, but I'll do as you ask."
Kyon: "Don't talk. Make all your answers 'meow'."
Shamisen: "Meow."

Asahina: "It's just, if I say what I'm about to say, it might sound like I don't trust Koizumi. But, um, I have to say it anyway."
Kyon: "Uh huh..."
Asahina: "It's just that, um, I don't think the same as him. How do I say it? I've got... a different opinion about things than Koizumi."
Kyon: "Are you talking about his theory that Haruhi is a god or something?"
Asahina: "[sighs] There's no doubt that Miss Suzumiya has the power to alter the reality of the present. But I don't think she can change the actual structure of this world. The world has always been this way."
Kyon: "So what you're saying... is that you believe the complete opposite of what Koizumi told me."
Asahina: "I'm pretty sure Miss Nagato has a different opinion, too. Um... I know this might give you a bad impression of Koizumi as a person... I'm really sorry, but... it's just that... you shouldn't believe what he says. ...Wait, no! I didn't mean it that way!"

Trivia[]

  • This episode was the 24th episode broadcast for Season 2, but was the fourteenth and final new episode.
  • This episode begins mid-conversation, with Yuki answering the question Haruhi asked at the previous episode's end.
  • Neither the intro theme nor the ending theme plays in this episode, with the credits rolling over the final scene instead.
  • In the dubbed version Koizumi identifies Shamisen as a Japanese Bobtail, despite the fact that Shamisen's tail is clearly not bobbed. This mistaken identification does not occur in the subtitled version or the light novel, with Koizumi instead expressing surprise that Shamisen is a male calico.
  • The disclaimer Kyon asks Haruhi to record is based on the real "all persons fictitious disclaimer", which appears in films to avoid the possibility of legal action.
  • The film's title appears before the film's credits begin in this episode, and not in "Episode 00" itself.
  • In the scene where Asahina discusses her views about Haruhi to Kyon, Tsuruya is seen eavesdropping in the background.
  • A person who appears to be Itsuki Koizumi is seen unconscious on the street after the talk with Kyon on the bridge, soon after Koizumi complains of fatigue and stress.
  • In the scene on the roof, Haruhi says that they have finished filming in the subtitled version. In the dubbed version, she instead says that they have a few shots left to do.
  • In the sutitled version, Haruhi says that the film's editing is pretty good for something done by Kyon. She is a bit more charitable in the dubbed version, saying instead that it's pretty good considering he had to do it at the last minute.
  • The scene at the end of this episode where Kyon tells Haruhi about aliens, time travelers, and espers immediately follows the scene at the end of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part 6", where he says he will tell her such things.
Sliders 01

A young swordsman and a bearded dwarf?

  • While leaving the viewing room after watching the completed film for the first time, Kyon recalls a group of people in clothing styles that are common in fantasy worlds in fiction.
Sliders 02

Two Heroes fighting an evil Sorcerer to save a Princess?

A common world setting of people transported to another world in Japanese novels is the High Fantasy medieval type world. The clothes of the people who were seen throughout the school by Kyon matches the style of those usually found in that genre.

Kyon found out they were not part of any program in the school's cultural festival. Some viewers speculate that they are sliders. They went unnoticed due to the fact that the school was in the middle of preparations for the Cultural Festival and such bizarre behavior and clothing would not be so out of place during that period of time.
